The Stages of Periodontal/Gum Diseases
Healthy gums: Healthy gums are firm and pink.
They do not bleed when you brush or floss.
Gingivitis: It is usually the first stage
of gum disease. The gums become red, swollen and bleed easily. If
left untreated it can lead to periodontitis.
Early (Mild) Periodontitis: This is the beginning
of bone and tissue loss around the teeth. Pockets form as gums separate
from teeth. Periodontitis can only be treated by a dental professional
Moderate Periodontitis: Pockets between tooth
and gum deepen. There is more bone loss. Teeth may loosen or separate.
Severe Periodontitis: Pockets deepen and
pus may form. There is extensive bone loss. Teeth become very loose
and abscess.
