Instruction for Intravenous Sedation
You are scheduled to undergo dental treatment utilizing
intravenous sedation. Sedative and/or pain and anxiety relieving medications
will be administered directly into the blood stream to make your dental
visit more pleasant and more relaxing.
To insure the best results, and for your safety and
well being, you must follow these rules:
- You may eat a light meal about 6 hours before your
appointment and nothing by mouth thereafter. You may have small drinks
of water during this time, but that is all. No coffee, tea, milk,
coke or fruit juices. No alcohol should be consumed the day of the
procedure, and up to 24 hours after the procedure.
- Wear loose fitting clothing, and a short sleeved
shirt. Flat-heeled shoes should be worn. It is a good idea to leave
watches and jewelry at home.
Be prepared to have someone drive you home, as you may experience
some drowsiness or altered perception following the intravenous sedation.
The person accompanying you must be a responsible adult. If you come
alone, we will not be able to perform the procedure. It is best if
the person who accompanies you, waits for you the duration of the
appointment.
- Do not take any medications except those prescribed
by your physician or by Dr. Michael J. Hoffmann.
- Since medications stay in your blood stream for
a variable length of time, do not drive a vehicle or use hazardous
devices or machinery until you are fully recovered from any effects
of the medications; at least 24 hours after the procedure.
- After returning home, rest the remainder of the
day. The next day you can begin to resume usual activities carefully
and gradually. Eat lightly for the rest of the day; but eat a sufficient
quantity of nutritious foods (like soup and cooked vegetables) to
maintain your nutritional intake.
- The following day, begin to resume you usual dietary
intake carefully and gradually without overloading your stomach.
Report any unusual circumstances to Dr. Michael J.
Hoffmann, including any unusual swelling, bleeding, nausea, vomiting,
or unusual behavior. If you have any questions, it is best to call for
clarification. Please call (314) 862-7844.
Please call the office the morning after surgery and
make you appointment for follow-up care
